The Greatest In Heaven

Speaking with my wife and my sister-in-law Carol, the topic turned to how we as children hang on to this world’s so called treasures. We agreed that it is the want of these “items” that creates our sorrow. An anecdote to this poison is cutting the chains that tie us to this world. How? Give it away. As we give our “stuff” away, we find happiness. The most amazing thing about this fact is that the more you give, the more you receive. It becomes a part of the process called Sanctification.

This verse provides a glimpse into what is in store for us when we get to Heaven. The question is posed to Jesus with child-like innocence. You can feel the curiosity in the questions from the disciples…

Matthew 18:1-4
1 About that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?”
2 Jesus called a little child to him and put the child among them. 3 Then he said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. 4 So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.

We must become like little children. With the curiosity and innocence that children possess. Have you ever watched a child as they learn something new? The way that their eyes look, their expressions, body language, and how they are so eager to figure it all out? Then the questions come, with wide open eyes. That is what Jesus is referring to. The greatest in the kingdom of Heaven will be not resemble the most powerful here on Earth. On the contrary. The greatest in Heaven will be the “meek” of this Earth.

Lord, help us to be more like you and less like us. Help us to possess the innocence and humility of a child. Heavenly Father, we ask that you give us the ability to see the value in the Kingdom of Heaven, and see that this world is only temporary. Whether we are wealthy or poor, help us to place you first in our lives and know that Heaven is coming soon. We thank you for your gift of forgiveness and love. Through your death and resurrection we have been saved and delivered. Amen.
